more about me and yoga

I have been practicing yoga for almost 2 decades now, although my practice looks very different today then it did back then. I completed my first 500 hour teacher training in 2013 with Moksha (now Modo) Yoga. I have since taken trainings in Yin Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga, Yogassage, and Prenatal/Postnatal Yoga. I love to learn and can be often found nerding out about anatomy, breathing, the nervous system, or the pelvic floor.

Yoga has helped me recover from soft tissue damage from a MVA, learn about and embrace my hypermobility, manage my ADHD symptoms, helped me with anxiety and depression, gotten me through 3 pregnancies and the postpartum period that followed, helped me heal a torn meniscus, and supported me through grief. I have grown so much through practicing and teaching yoga, and I am passionate about sharing the benefits of yoga with others.

When you take my class, my intention for you is simply to leave the mat feeling a little better than when you stepped onto it. I am both intuitive and compassionate in my teaching. I love to incorporate breathwork, chanting, music and sound frequencies, and gentle touch (only with your consent) into my classes. I promise to bring authenticity, humour, and a student-focused approach to each class I teach.

As a late-diagnosed, high masking neurodivergent person myself, I welcome all neurotypes to my classes, and I am happy to discuss accommodations we can make to help you feel comfortable and safe in your practice. I try to create an environment that is inclusive for all bodies, ages, and genders.

I believe in intersectionality - yoga is a movement for liberation, but no one is free until we are all free. I acknowledge the spiritual roots of yoga, and view the practice through a trauma informed and anti-oppression lens. I am actively working to decolonize my yoga teachings and practice, to acknowledge my own biases, and to use my voice and privilege to amplify the voices and experiences of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ folks

Off the yoga mat, I love to curl up with a good book. I can often be found with my hands in the dirt, tending to my veggie and flower garden or my house plants. I have a love/hate relationship with cold plunging. Two years into the practice, I still hate feeling cold, but 3 minutes in an ice bath or the ocean makes me feel like I can conquer anything. I’m married to my soulmate and biggest cheerleader - our relationship has given me the freedom to be myself that I didn’t realize I was missing. My biggest practice in compassion, slowing down, and living in the moment is parenting our three children. Some days are challenging, but I am so grateful for this full life and everything in it.

how i got into birthwork

My own journey through pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period was not at all what I expected - even the second and third time around! Even though I was an active and healthy person, I found pregnancy both physically and emotionally challenging. Even though I had lots of friends and family to support me, I felt alone in my experience. Even though I did lots of preparation and research, made a birth plan, and hired a doula, I experienced birth trauma. Even though I tried everything, I struggled with breastfeeding. Even though I teach and practice yoga and meditation, I experienced postpartum anxiety and depression. It was only once I let go of control and surrendered to my experience that I began to feel free, and learned to move through the challenges of the perinatal period (and there have been many!).

Now, as your doula, I am here to support you. I will work to get to know you and build our relationship so that you feel safe and comfortable with me. I will provide you with unbiased, evidence based information so that you can make informed choices that feel right for you and your family. I hope that with my help, you will feel empowered and confident in your birth and postpartum experiences. Reach out if you would like to learn more about what I can offer you - I would love to connect with you!
